Bluetick Coonhound

The Bluetick Coonhound is an American breed developed for hunting raccoons and other game. Its origins can be traced back to the 18th century, mainly in the southern United States, where breeders focused on producing a dog with excellent scenting ability and endurance. The breed descends from the English Coonhound and features distinctive blue mottling in its coat.

Bluetick Coonhounds are medium to large dogs. Males generally weigh between 55 to 100 pounds, while females typically weigh around 45 to 80 pounds. They stand about 21 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder.

Bluetick Coonhounds are known for their friendly, affectionate nature. They are loyal and tend to be good with children and other pets when properly socialized. Their strong prey drive and hunting instincts mean they can be enthusiastic and may require consistent training to manage their behavior.

These dogs have a short, dense coat that is recognizable for its unique blue ticked pattern. The coloration usually consists of a mix of blue and black patches, along with tan markings on the face, legs, and chest. Their coat is relatively low-maintenance, requiring regular brushing to control shedding.

Bluetick Coonhounds thrive in active environments where they can exercise frequently and explore. They do best in homes with yards that provide space to run and play, and they should not be left alone for long periods, as they enjoy companionship and can become bored easily.

These dogs excel in scent work and enjoy activities that engage their tracking skills. They enjoy long walks, hikes, and outdoor adventures. Bluetick Coonhounds also thrive in hunting, tracking exercises, and other dog sports like agility and obedience training. Providing scent games and mental challenges is essential to keep them stimulated.
