Peruvian Inca Orchid
The Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO), also known as the Peruvian Hairless Dog or "Perro Sin Pelo," is an ancient breed that originated in Peru, believed to date back over 1,000 years. This breed was highly regarded by the Inca civilization, serving as companions and guardians as well as being depicted in art and pottery from that era. The breed is one of the oldest American breeds, and its unique hairless trait is thought to have been bred for both companionship and practical purposes, including warmth. The PIO has gained recognition in recent years as a companion breed worldwide.
Peruvian Inca Orchids come in different sizes. They can be classified as small, medium, or large, with three size varieties:
- Small: typically weighs between 8-12 pounds and stands around 10-14 inches at the shoulder.
- Medium: usually weighs between 20-30 pounds and measures about 14-18 inches.
- Large: can weigh between 30-55 pounds with a height of roughly 18-26 inches.
Peruvian Inca Orchids are known for their friendly, affectionate, and loyal temperament. They are typically gentle and bond closely with their families, often forming strong attachments. They can be reserved with strangers but are generally sociable and good with children and other pets. Early socialization and training are important to develop well-adjusted individuals. Due to their intelligence, they typically respond well to training but may require consistent reinforcement due to their occasionally independent nature.
The Peruvian Inca Orchid is known for its hairless variant, although there is also a coated variety. The hairless version has smooth skin and may have some fringe on the head, tail, and feet. The skin can range in color from various shades, including gray, brown, black, or spotted. The coated variety has a short, dense coat and may come in several colors and patterns. Regular skin care is essential for the hairless variety to protect against sunburn and irritation.
This breed thrives in active households where they receive love, attention, and regular interaction. They can adapt to various living situations, including apartments, as long as they get sufficient exercise and mental stimulation. They are social dogs that enjoy being around their families and do not do well when left alone for long periods.
Peruvian Inca Orchids enjoy a variety of activities that engage their minds and bodies. Daily walks, playtime, and interactive games are essential for their well-being. They can excel in dog sports such as agility, obedience, and lure coursing, which allow them to showcase their agility and intelligence. Engaging them in social activities and providing opportunities for mental stimulation through puzzle toys and training exercises is also beneficial.
