The Transylvanian Hound, also known as the Transylvanian Mattress Hound, is a breed that hails from the Transylvania region of Romania. This breed is believed to date back several hundred years, with ancestry linked to ancient hunting dogs used by the Magyars (Hungarians). The breed was historically utilized for hunting large game, such as wild boar and deer, and has been valued for its keen sense of smell and ability to work in packs.

Transylvanian Hounds are medium to large dogs. Males typically weigh between 55 to 75 pounds (25 to 34 kg) and stand about 22 to 27 inches (56 to 69 cm) tall at the shoulder. Females are usually slightly smaller, weighing between 45 to 65 pounds (20 to 29 kg) and standing around 20 to 25 inches (51 to 63 cm) tall.

Transylvanian Hounds are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and strong instinct to work. They are social and friendly dogs, often forming close bonds with their families. Being a hunting breed, they can be independent and may exhibit a strong prey drive. Early socialization and training are essential to ensure they develop well-rounded temperaments and good behavior in various settings.

The Transylvanian Hound has a short to medium-length coat that is dense and weather-resistant. The coat color typically includes shades of black and tan, and it may have a slightly wavy texture. Regular grooming helps maintain coat health and reduces shedding.

Transylvanian Hounds thrive in active households where they receive ample exercise and mental stimulation. They adapt best to environments where they can engage in outdoor activities, such as farms or homes with large yards. They enjoy companionship and typically do well in family settings.
