American English Coonhound
The American English Coonhound has its roots as a hunting dog, developed in the United States for tracking and hunting raccoons and other game. Its lineage can be traced back to the English Hounds brought over by early settlers, particularly those with foxhounds and other breeds adapted for hunting in America. Recognized for their prowess in the field, these hounds became popular for their excellent scenting abilities and are now a recognized breed in the hound group.
American English Coonhounds are medium to large-sized dogs. Males typically weigh between 50 to 65 pounds and stand about 22 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder. Females generally weigh between 40 to 55 pounds and measure about 21 to 25 inches tall. Their athletic build allows them to excel in various activities.
American English Coonhounds are known for their friendly, affectionate, and outgoing nature. They are typically good with children and can be friendly with other dogs, especially if properly socialized. Coonhounds are intelligent and eager to please, but they can also be independent thinkers, which sometimes leads to stubbornness during training. Early socialization and consistent training are essential for well-rounded behavior.
The breed has a short, smooth coat that is easy to maintain. The coat is usually tri-color (white, black, and tan) or redtick (white with reddish ticking). Coonhounds are moderate shedders, and occasional brushing helps keep their coat healthy and reduces shedding.
This breed thrives in an active environment where they can run and explore. They are best suited for families or individuals who can provide them with ample exercise and mental stimulation. A home with a fenced yard is ideal, as they have strong hunting instincts and may chase small animals.
American English Coonhounds enjoy a variety of activities, including:
- Long walks or runs
- Hiking and outdoor adventures
- Tracking and scent work
- Agility training
- Hunting or participating in field trials
- Swimming
These activities help meet their high energy levels and allow them to utilize their exceptional scenting skills. Engaging in regular exercise and training will keep them happy and healthy, and they are generally eager to participate in family activities.
