Berger Picard

  • The Berger Picard is a French herding dog that originates from the Picardie region of France. This breed has been used for centuries to herd sheep and protect livestock. Although they are one of the oldest French herding breeds, they were relatively unknown outside of France until the late 20th century. The Berger Picard is recognized for its unique appearance and versatile working abilities.

  • Height: Males typically stand between 24 to 26 inches (61 to 66 cm) at the shoulder, while females generally measure about 22 to 24 inches (56 to 61 cm).
  • Weight: Males weigh around 50 to 70 pounds (23 to 32 kg), and females weigh between 40 to 60 pounds (18 to 27 kg).

Berger Picards are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and affectionate nature. They are often described as playful and energetic, with a strong desire to work. While they are very friendly with their families, they can be reserved around strangers and may take time to warm up to new people. They are highly trainable and typically respond well to positive reinforcement methods.

The Berger Picard has a medium-length, harsh, and weather-resistant coat that typically features a fawn or brindle coloration. Some may have a darker mask or lighter markings. The coat is relatively low-maintenance but requires regular brushing to keep it healthy and free of mats

Berger Picards thrive in active environments and require regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. They do best in homes with ample space, such as those with yards or rural settings where they can run and play. They are not well-suited for a sedentary lifestyle and need to engage in activities that provide both physical and mental stimulation.

Due to their herding background and energetic nature, Berger Picards enjoy a variety of activities:

  • Herding Trials: They excel in herding events, showcasing their natural instincts and abilities.
  • Obedience and Agility: They perform well in obedience training and agility courses due to their intelligence and eagerness to please.
  • Outdoor Activities: Berger Picards love outdoor adventures like hiking, running, and exploring, making them great companions for active families.
  • Interactive Play: Engaging in games like fetch or tug-of-war helps channel their energy and strengthen the bond with their owners.

Overall, the Berger Picard is a versatile and loyal breed that thrives in active households, making them wonderful companions for those who can provide the exercise and mental challenges they need.
