Broholmer

The Broholmer, also known as the Danish Mastiff, is a large dog breed that originated in Denmark. The breed has a rich history, with roots tracing back to the 16th century when they were used as guard dogs for estates and as hunting companions for nobility. The Broholmer nearly faced extinction in the 19th century but was revived in the 20th century through careful breeding efforts. They are recognized for their strength, gentle nature, and loyalty.

Broholmers are large and muscular dogs. Males typically weigh between 100 to 140 pounds, while females generally weigh around 80 to 120 pounds. They stand about 25 to 30 inches tall at the shoulder, with males being larger and heavier than females.

Broholmers are known for their calm, gentle, and protective demeanor. They are loyal family companions that form strong bonds with their owners. While they may be reserved with strangers, they are generally good with children and can be gentle with other pets when properly socialized. Early socialization and training are important to encourage their friendly nature.

The Broholmer has a short, dense coat that lies flat against the body. Their coat is usually fawn or brindle, with possibilities for white markings. The breed's coat is relatively low-maintenance, requiring occasional brushing to control shedding and keep the coat healthy.

Broholmers thrive in homes where they receive frequent companionship and adequate space to move around. They do well in families with larger houses and yards, as they do not typically fare well in confined apartment living. While they enjoy a good balance of activity, they are not overly hyperactive and often exhibit a laid-back demeanor.

Broholmers appreciate regular exercise, such as daily walks, playtime in the yard, and opportunities to engage in various activities like fetch. They can participate in dog sports, obedience training, or gentle agility, though they do not require intense physical workouts. Mental stimulation through training exercises and interactive play is also beneficial for their overall well-being.
