Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested is believed to have originated in ancient China, where they were likely bred as ratters on ships and in homes to control vermin. While the exact origins are unclear, the breed’s history dates back to at least the 13th century. The Chinese Crested gained popularity in the United States in the late 20th century and is known for its unique hairless variety, as well as its powderpuff counterpart, which has a full coat of hair. They have become popular as companion dogs and often participate in dog shows and exhibitions.
Chinese Cresteds are small dogs, typically standing between 11 to 13 inches (28 to 33 cm) tall at the shoulder. They generally weigh between 8 to 12 pounds (3.6 to 5.4 kg), with males and females being similar in size.
Chinese Cresteds are known for their affectionate, social, and playful nature. They tend to bond closely with their families and can be quite loving and devoted companions. They can be alert and cautious around strangers, making them good watchdogs, but typically warm up quickly once they feel comfortable. Early socialization and training can help them develop a confident and well-rounded temperament.
The breed comes in two distinct varieties: hairless and powderpuff. The hairless variety has hair on the head, feet, and tail, while the rest of the body is generally hairless. The powderpuff variety has a soft, full coat of hair all over its body. The hairless variety requires special care to protect the skin from sunburn and dryness, while the powderpuff needs regular grooming to prevent matting.
Chinese Cresteds thrive in environments where they receive lots of love and attention. They can adapt well to apartments or homes, provided they get regular exercise and social interaction. They prefer being indoors with their families and tend to have a high need for companionship, so they do not fare well when left alone for long periods.
Due to their small size, Chinese Cresteds do not require extensive exercise but benefit from daily walks and play sessions. They enjoy interactive games, agility training, and mental stimulation through puzzle toys. Their playful nature makes them suited for indoor activities, and they also excel in dog sports and competitions. Additionally, they love participating in family activities and being the center of attention.
