Pekingese

The Pekingese is an ancient toy breed that originated in China, specifically in the Forbidden City, where they were cherished as companion dogs by Chinese royalty. Believed to date back over 2,000 years, the breed is thought to have descended from the Lion Dog and smaller breeds like the Shih Tzu. The Pekingese was highly sought after and often seen as a symbol of nobility and status. They were brought to Europe in the late 19th century, where their popularity grew, and they were recognized by various kennel clubs.

Pekingese are small dogs. Adult Pekingese typically weigh between 7-14 pounds, with a height that generally measures around 6-9 inches at the shoulder. They have a sturdy and compact build.

Pekingese are known for their affectionate, courageous, and independent temperament. They are typically loyal to their families and can be quite playful. While they are often loving and enjoy being pampered, Pekingese can also display a strong-willed nature and may be somewhat aloof or suspicious of strangers. Early socialization and consistent training are important to ensure they're well-rounded and confident.

The Pekingese coat is long, flowing, and luxurious, with a dense undercoat. They come in various colors, including fawn, black, white, brindle, and combinations of these. Regular grooming is essential to prevent matting and keep the coat healthy; daily brushing is recommended to manage shedding and maintain the coat’s appearance.

This breed thrives in a loving household where they receive regular companionship and attention. Pekingese can adapt to various living situations, including apartments, as they require only moderate exercise. They are not suited for overly active households and prefer a calm environment. They do best when not left alone for long periods, as they enjoy being around their human companions.

Pekingese enjoy a variety of activities, including gentle walks, indoor play, and interactive games. While they appreciate short outings, they do not require extensive exercise. They can also participate in dog sports like obedience and conformation shows, which allow them to showcase their charm and personality. Mental stimulation through puzzle toys and training exercises is also beneficial.
