Smooth Fox Terrier
The Smooth Fox Terrier originated in England in the 19th century and was bred primarily for hunting foxes. It stems from a cross between various terrier breeds, including the now-extinct Black and Tan Terrier and other working breeds. The Smooth Fox Terrier quickly distinguished itself from the Rough Fox Terrier due to its short, smooth coat and was recognized by kennel clubs in the early 20th century.
- Height: Typically stands between 14 to 15.5 inches (36 to 39 cm) at the shoulder.
- Weight: Generally weighs around 15 to 18 pounds (7 to 8 kg).
The Smooth Fox Terrier is known for its:
- Energetic and playful nature, making them great companions for active families.
- Intelligent and alert personality, often displaying curiosity and a strong prey drive.
- Friendly disposition, usually getting along well with children and other pets when properly socialized.
- Tenacious and sometimes stubborn temperament, which can make training a challenge if not approached with consistency and patience.
The Smooth Fox Terrier features a short, dense, and flat-lying coat that is weather-resistant. The coat is predominantly white with black and/or tan markings. Because of the short coat, grooming is relatively easy, requiring only occasional brushing to remove loose hair.
This breed thrives in an active household where they can participate in family activities. Belgian Tervurens adapt well to a variety of living situations, but they do best in environments where they have space to run and play. Due to their intelligence and energy, they require regular exercise and engagement.
Smooth Fox Terriers enjoy a variety of activities, including:
- Regular walks, jogs, or play sessions to expend their energy.
- Engaging in dog sports such as agility, obedience, and flyball.
- Participating in games that stimulate their hunting instincts, like fetch or scent work.
- Socialization opportunities with other dogs, people, and environments to help curb any excess energy or stubbornness.
Overall, the Smooth Fox Terrier is a vibrant, affectionate, and intelligent breed that requires an active lifestyle and consistent training to flourish as a beloved companion.
